Attractions in Barbados - Things to do...Places to go

Gun Hill Signal Station

Gun Hill Signal Station, located in the parish of St. George, provides a magnificent and captivating view of the entire island. It is the finest of a series of signal stations built in 1818. These stations sighted ships approaching Barbados and signaled to each other in warning of the approaching vessel. The signal station was restored and landscaped by the Barbados National Trust and now houses a collection of military memorabilia. There is also a statue of a lion which was carved out of a single piece of rock in 1868 by an officer at the signal station.

Water Sports

You may participate in a number of water sports in Barbados including: sailing, fishing, surfing and windsurfing. Diving is also a popular activity and there are a number of reefs and wrecks you can explore.

Farley Hill

Here you will find breathtaking views of the Atlantic coast and the ruins of a once beautiful Georgian mansion. An ideal picnic or wedding spot, the house was used in the film Island in The Sun in 1965. Farley Hill was officially opened as a national park by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1966 and once a year is home to the Barbados Jazz Festival.

Welchman Hall Gully

Located in the parish of St.Thomas, is a three-quarter mile (1.2km) long “gully” (really a garden) and home to a number of tropical plants and trees, including nutmeg, bamboo, clove and palms.

In addition to the impressive flora, look out for the world’s largest pillar (the joining of a stalactite and stalagmite) and the gazebo, which looks out to the Atlantic Ocean.

The Animal Flower Cave

The Animal Flower Cave is located at the most Northerly point of Barbados in the parish of St. Lucy. The name “Animal Flower Cave” comes from the sea anemones found in the pools of the cave. Some of these pools are deep enough for you to swim in! There are also several openings looking out to sea, offering some spectacular views.

Golf

Sunny weather all year round makes Barbados an ideal location for golfing and the perfect vacation spot for golfers and “would-be” golfers! These glorious weather conditions are complemented by excellent golf courses and facilities and several hotels offer special golf packages. Several golf tournaments are hosted throughout the year, attracting participants from a number of countries including Europe and North America. In addition most golf clubs offer professional instruction.

Barbados was chosen to host the 2006 World Golf Championships World Cup. The four-day tournament was played at the Sandy Lane Resort on the west coast of the island.

Horse Racing

For an afternoon of fun and excitement, join the sport of kings at the Garrison Savannah! It is a day for all the family. Street food, vendors, parades, picnics and mingling are as important to many as the races and the bets! The racing season runs for almost the entire year and a number of thoroughbred horses and creoles run for handsome prize money.

The main event of the Barbados horse racing season is the Sandy Lane Gold Cup (formerly the Cockspur Gold Cup), which attracts entrants from across the Caribbean and jockeys from the United Kingdom and Canada.
